Summary
[edit]DescriptionElephant at the gate - geograph.org.uk - 370296.jpg |
English: Elephant at the gate Looking through the main gates into the Coventry War Memorial Park. The gate decoration reflects the design of Coventry's arms prior to the post WWII addition of the phoenix. A 1937 official guide describes the arms as "Arms: Parted palewise red and green, a gold elephant with a gold castle of three domed towers on its back. Crest: On a gold and red wreath, a cat (sometimes described as a cat-o'mountain), statant guardant, in natural colours. Motto: Camera Principis - the Chamber (or Court) of the Prince. The right to use Arms was conferred by Edward III, probably at the time of the incorporation of the City in 1345, but a corporate seal was in use prior to this date." |
