From thousands of throatscame the shout, Long live the Emperors bride !The sound was so overwhelming that Elizabethstood for some moments by her lovers side as ifspellbound; then, as her glance swept slowly overthe excited throng, she smiled charmingly and wavedher handkerchief to the delighted spectators. Manyyears have passed since that day, many misfortuneshave overtaken Austria and the house of Hapsburg,but eyewitnesses are still living who remember thatmoment and tell of the picture the fair young prin-cess made as she then appeared in all her exquisiteloveliness. rpMPEROR FRANZ JOSEPH^—^ in his t^wenty-eighth year S8 WEDDING CEREMONIES ^ leading her up the great staircase, which was deco-rated from top to bottom with tropical plants andflowers. On the following day the state entry intoVienna took place. Every house had been deco-rated by loving hands, and the streets throughw^hich the bride was to pass were perfect rivers offlowers. The Elizabeth Bridge, which connectedVienna with the suburb of Wieden or An derWien, was opened that day and given the name ofthe Empress.^ Here the mayor and council of thecity were stationed to welcome her.
