Description
Français : Au bord d'un chemin creux dans le bocage, un chef vendéen debout l'épée à la main fait signe à son groupe de dix Vendéens de ne pas bouger, un soldat républicain s'avance en éclaireur au devant d'une troupe plus nombreuses. Cette scène de la guerre de Vendée ou de la chouannerie ne fait référence à aucun événement précis. Sa seule ambition probable est de montrer ce qu’a pu être le commun des combattants de cette guerre. D’un côté des soldats républicains évoluant dans un milieu naturel, le bocage, qu’ils ne connaissaient pas et qui leur resta d’autant plus hostile qu’il se prêtait admirablement bien à ce type de combat qu’est l’embuscade isolée, base de la guérilla ; et de l’autre des paysans ayant quant à eux une "science" sans égal de ce terrain qu’il surent utiliser au mieux.

English: At the edge of a sunken road in the bocage, a Vendée chief standing sword in hand signals to his group of ten Vendéans not to move, a Republican soldier advances as a scout in front of a larger troop . This scene from the Vendée War or the Chouannerie does not refer to any specific event. Its only probable ambition is to show what the common fighters of this war could have been. On the one hand, Republican soldiers evolving in a natural environment, the bocage, which they did not know and which remained all the more hostile to them as it lent itself admirably well to this type of combat which is the isolated ambush , guerrilla base; and on the other, peasants having an unequaled "knowledge" of this land, which they knew how to use to the best of their ability.
