GENUS /T^.—LIT H O S P E R M U M. Toumef. Calyx 5-partite. Corolla regular, funnelshaped or salvershaped;throat open, without distinct scales, but often with 5 small bosses;limb more or less spreading, 5-lobed. Stamens equal, generally in-cluded. Style undivided. Nucules ovate, ovoid, smooth or rugose,bony, without a tumid ring at the base, attached to the flat receptacleby a plain surface. Herbs or undershrubs of various habit. This genus of plants derives its name from the hardness of its seeds, and is thecontraction of two Greek words, \idoc, a stone, and aTzipi-ia, a seed. SPECIES I.—LITHOSPEEMUM PDRPUREO-C^RULEUM. Linn. E. B. 117. LithospermTun purpuro-coeruleum. Purjile Gromwell. BORAGINACEiE. 95 bent. Flowering stem erect. Leaves elliptical-lanceolate, very acute,minutely pubescent on both sides. Inflorescence of 2 or 3 branchesfrom the a-pex of the stem, Avhich elongate much in fruit. Bractslonger than the calyx. Pedicels much shorter than the calyx infruit. Corolla three times as long as the calyx. Xucules bony, white,globular-ovoid, rounded at the apex, polished and shining, less thanone-third the length of the calyx segments. In woods and bushy places, on chalk and limestone. Rare, and verylocal. It occurs about Mary Church, Devon; near Bridgewater andTauuton, Somerset; Denbigh and Caswell Bay, Glamorgan; and inDarenth Wood, near Greenhithe, Kent. The latter is the only stationin which I have myself collected it. There it grows near the middleof the wood, about 150 yards to the left of the public path going fromDarenth to Stone, but only flowers the second j-ear after the copsewood is cut. Engl
