Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Entrance to Loch Spelve looking towards Port na Saille There are some hazards for mariners entering or leaving Loch Spelve; the kyle is narrow and at spring tides there is a considerable tidal flow or stream. These pictures are taken at neap tide (when the Sun and Moon are not working in unison and there is not so much difference between high and low water and a slow tidal stream). Just off the picture to the right, there is a large underwater rock called the mushroom which mariners need to avoid, so to aid mariners the entrance is marked with leading lines and marks. One of the marks is the white painted rock to the extreme left of the picture; a further mark is the Green Starboard hand mark or perch (to the right of the picture) which is marking a smaller reef to the left side of the channel. This combined with a cross marked on the rock to the left of the perch is a further mark. (The perch and the rock are almost in line on this picture, when they are aligned this indicates that you are clear of the mushroom rock.)
