| Description |
English: Entrance to passageway, Whittington. Beside the footpath through the wood to the north-west of the village of Whittington is this entrance. The entrance is one of several that provided access to the Whittington stone quarries (stone mines). The workings were active between 1800 - 1864 and worked an area of 25 acres underground. Arthur Price rediscovered the forgotten workings in the 1980s and explored the complex maze of collapsed passageways for many years. He has since published an excellent account of the quarries in his book CHELTENHAM STONE - THE WHITTINGTON QUARRIES (2007). Information courtesy of Duncan Scutt |
