After the track had been laid a thorough inspection was made inorder to record exceptions from the proper numerical order of theties and to mark all tie-plates and spikes improperly placed. Tieson which the tie-plates or rails did not fit properly were adzed suffi-ciently to secure a good bearing, and improperly driven spikes werereset. Creosote was poured on all adzed surfaces of treated ties.From the results of this inspection the map shown in figure 18 wasprepared. A record was made also of any special points in connection withindividual ties, and these are given in Table 6. 1 The ties could not be bored before treatment, due to the fact that at that time the weight of rail andstyle of tie-plate had not been determined. 2 This car was loaned for the occasion by the Spencer-Otis Co., of Chicago, 111. 46 PKESERYAIIYE TREATMENT OF CEOSSIIES.
