The rawor worked red pipestone, therefore, constituted an article of barter,which was brought from its original place of occurrence to the presentEastern states of the Union. Objects of Shell Independent of burials were several deposits of freshwaterclam shells, found in connection with feast-pits, but none of theshells showed signs of use. Snail-shells also were found in someof these pits, but whether they had been buried intentionally orhad simply been in the surface soil with which the pits were filledcould not be determined. Among the worked-shell objects, notassociated with burials, was the columella of a small whelk, a fewfragments of sea-shells, a tubular bead, and a number of fragmentsof other beads.
