Summary
[edit]DescriptionExposed sand at the long groyne, Hengistbury Head - geograph.org.uk - 386352.jpg |
English: Exposed sand at the long groyne, Hengistbury Head. The long groyne, in the background, was built to retain the beach at Hengistbury Head and thus protect the headland itself from erosion. Transport of material (from west to east) along Poole Bay has been reduced by the numerous groynes in the Bournemouth area. This photo was taken at low tide when the sandy beach is at its widest. A strong northeasterly wind is driving fine dry sand across the beach into the sea. In the lee of the groyne the water is calm, beyond the windblown waves are cresting white. There are signs that advise people to stay off the long groyne, although some are fishing from the end here. This is obviously not a good idea in more stormy conditions - see 317665. |
