In early life Murillo painted many pictures illustra-tive of humble life, in which the manner was darkerand less refined than that of his later pictures, whichare mostly Scriptural or religious subjects. In his firststyle the outline was decided, if not hard, and the treat-ment of lights and shadows reminds one of Zurbaranor Caravaggio. Later he adopted a softer outline anda more mellow coloring. The style which is most char-acteristic of his celebrated works combines softnessand vigor with the finest coloring. His style has beensaid to hold a middle rank between the unpolishednaturalness of the Flemish and the ideal grace andgrandeur of the Italian school. A picture in the LondonNational Gallery representing the Son between theVirgin and St. Joseph, with the Father in the cloudsabove, may be regarded as a fair example of Murilloscharacteristic qualities. It was painted for the familyof tlie Marquis de Pedrosa, and was purchased by theEnglish government in 1837. The Immaculate Con-ception, in the Louvre, is a picture which strongly dis-plays his characteristic excellences.
