Deutsch: Wahrscheinlich wurde die Burg um 1110 von den Brüdern Adolf und Eberhard von Berg oberhalb der Lehne auf dem Wulfseck erbaut. Ihr erste Name war Wulfshagen. Später wurde sie in Altena umgenannt. Seit 1392 hatten die Grafen von der Mark, so der neue Name ihren Hauptwohnsitz aus dem rauen Sauerland in die Burg Mark bei Hamm verlegt. Von da an war die Burg Altena nur noch Amtmannsitz. Später war die Burg preußische Garnison und ein Krankenhaus. Auf Betreiben des Landrates Fritz Thomée wurde 1906 der Märkische Burgenverein gegründet der sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hatte, die stark verfallene Anlagen wieder aufzubauen. Die Arbeiten wurden 1918 abgeschlossen. 1914 gründete Richard Schürmann in den Gemäuern der Burg die erste Jugendherberge der Welt. Diese Räume sind heute noch zu besichtigen und gehören zum Museum der Burg. Heute gehört die Burg der Stadt Altena und beherbergt mehrere Museen. Einer Legende nach soll der Name Altena vom niederhochdeutschen Ausdruck ‚all te na‘ herrühren, was soviel bedeutet wie ‚all zu nah‘. Den Grafen von Arnsberg war die neue Burg einfach "all zu nah".

Later it was renamed in Altena . 1392 the Earl moved from the harsh Sauerland to his their new primary residence near Hamm. From then on the castle of Altena was only bailiff seat. Later the castle was the Prussian garrison and hospital. At the initiative of the district administrator Fritz Thomée the märkische castle club was founded in 1906.The club wanted to rebuild the castle The work was completed in 1918. 1914 Richard founded Schürmann within the walls of the castle the first youth hostel in the world. This rooms can still be seen today and are part of the Museum of the castle. Today, the city of Altena ist owner of the castle. It houses multiply museums. According to legend, the name Altena is based on the low german term ‚al te na‘, what means ‚it is to near‘. The Counts castle of Arnsberg was too close to the new castle. |
