Summary
[edit]DescriptionFarnborough, The Clock House and its eponymous roundabout - geograph.org.uk - 1390071.jpg |
English: Farnborough: The Clock House and its eponymous roundabout The Clock House was built in 1895 and is currently occupied by Haart the estate agents. The top of the tower once stood on four round posts and used to be about two metres higher than it is now. A clock house differs from a clock tower by having residential accommodation as an integral part of the structure.
The roundabout is on the A325 Farnborough Road at its junction with the B3014 Cove Road. The roundabout has a certain claim to fame. In 1963 The Times of all newspapers ran a news item with the banner headline "Gas kills plants on roundabout". It seems that any number of gas pipes were under the roundabout and were always leaking causing the council's plantings to continuously wither and die. Judging by the current display of orange marigolds the problem appears to have been solved. The roundabout is currently sponsored by the local Blue Coat company http://www.bluecoat.com/ Free publicity, lads! |
