Description
English: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 128:

Technical notes: The support consists of a single piece of plain-weave fabric with the tacking edges along all four sides preserved. The selvedges have been retained at the top and bottom and the canvas is still mounted on its original stretcher. The reddish-brown ground has been applied evenly and thickly. There has been light-grey underpainting below the face and the colour-surface of the garments. The paint layers have been thinly applied in part with areas of impasto applied in white. This work, which is in poor condition, was probably painted in the 18th century.

Provenance: Transferred in 1866 from Gripsholm.

Bibliography: Cat. Gripsholm I, Stockholm 1951, p. 50.

This is a waist-length portrait of Ferdinand IV circumscribed by a painted oval in which he is wearing Polish costume with a plumed headgear. The subject is standing with one hand by his side in a traditional monarchical pose. The background is neutral with no visual setting in a painted oval. For technical reasons this portrait in the manner of Frans Luyckx can be dated to the 18th century.
