GEN. CHARLES R. LOWELL NOTES 319 sometimes furnishing a proof of some doubtful form. But thebest proof that I found of the sculptors success was the satis-faction of Mrs. Charles Russell Lowell. It had been quite diffi-cult for me to get her permission to have the work done. Ofcourse she saw in her husband a thousand things that no marblecould express. But she wrote me February 23, 1885, It is won-derful that Mr. French should have been able to get so muchcharacter into the bust, and I am perfectly satisfied to have it re-main as a likeness of Colonel Lowell. Framingham, March 10, 1886.
