He was a lover of good booksand devotedly attached to art and is said to have owned one of the finest collectionsof paintings and other works of art in the city. Identified with all the moral, intel-lectual, and artistic life of Chicago, he was greatly missed in all those spheres andtrue progressive efforts. He was a trustee of the Art Institute and in 1SS4-5 was amember of the Art Committee of the Inter-State Industrial Exposition. Hewas intimately associated with the work of several of the most successful institu-tions in the city, in the field of organized charity. In 1883 and 1884 he was a direc-tor of the Chicago Relief and Aid Society and in the latter year a member of theexecutive committee. He was the societys treasurer at the time of his death.In 18S4 he also served as president of the Home of the Friendless. Mr. Field wasa director of the first opera festival given in Chicago in 1885, the affair being givenby the Chicago Opera Festival Association. He was also a director in 1886 of theInter-State Industrial Exposition. His financial interests in Chicago were ex-tensive He was at one time one of the large holders of stock in the West DivisionStreet Railwaj Company and went out with J. Russell Jones and others
