bitten, shapeless nails. Biting the nails isa bad habit. It may lead to very bad sores on thefinger ends, and it may also carry disease into themouth. There is no better mark of tidiness abouta boy or a girl, than clean, well-shaped finger nails. Hang-Nails.—Sometimes a little narrow strip ofskin near the root of the nail is torn up and hangsby one end. This is called a hang-nail, and it isvery sore and painful. Biting off hang-nails makesthem much vvorse. They should be cut off close tothe skin vs^th sharp scissors. The Care of the Hair.—If the pores about theroots of the hair become clogged with w^aste matterfrom the skin, or with dust from outside, the hair islikely to fall out; and it may lose its color or lusterif the little oil glands are kept from working prop-erly. The hair so easily catches dust and dirt thatit should be frequently washed, or shampooed, withgood soap and soft water. — 116 —XXXYIL—A PICTUEE LESSON Write a short composition upon The Care of the Hair.

THE VILLAGE BARBER. XXXYIIL—CLOTHING. We must be careful to clothe ourselves so thatwe shall keep the body warm enough, and not harmany part of it by the kind of clothes we wear, or bythe way we wear them. Clothing for Warmth.—Clothing does not makebodily heat; but it prevents the bodily heat frompassing off into the air, and so makes it easier forthe body to keep itself warm. In cold weatherthere is as much danoer in wearino; too much cloth-ing, as in wearing too little. Too much clothingover any part of the body overheats it and makes ittender, so that it becomes very quickly chilled whennext it is exposed. Sore throat is often caused byneedlessly wearing a muffler about the neck. Woolen clothino: worn next to the skin absorbsthe perspiration more readily and keeps the bodyfrom becoming quickly chilled. Harmful Clothing.—Tight clothing always harms. There is no unused space in the human body. Agirl needs just as much room for her liver, stomach, and lunfys as a bov does. Tio-ht
