Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Footbridge over Great Hograh Beck. Footbridge is a misnomer as it carries the Public Bridleway named Skinner Howe Cross Road. This would be an ancient track to Baysdale Abbey from Castleton and hence Whitby and the coast. A track along the higher slopes of Baysdale would have been more favourable than the dale bottom which would have been steeper, wooded and much harder going. The keystone of the bridge is dated 1938 and is reputed to have been built by Rowland Close (1908 - 1978) a reknown local archaeologist who lived in Baysdale but I suspect this replaced an earlier bridge.
