Like those of other Maples, they are inpairs, united at the base, and furnished with a wing.Their external appearance is precisely similar; but, upon examination, I have uniformly found one ofeach pair abortive and worthless. Poor sandy soils are notsuited to the growth of the Sugar Maple. It willthrive on almost any good tillage land, and flourisheson the banks of ravines and the sides of bluffs andhills. The Sugar Maple was strongly recommended byMichaux, for propagation in the North of Europe, assuperior to any other species. It certainly meritscultivation in its native country, both for its utilityand beauty. Its slow growth in its early stages shouldnot discourage its propagation, since it continues toincrease in size at an age when the Silver Maple isnearly stationary. 4.
