Summary[edit]

Description
English: Former Bank of Liverpool now Soletrader. This stylish building, on the corner of Eastgate Street and St Werburgh Street, was designed by Chester's famous architect John Douglas. The building was erected in 1897, almost certainly for the Bank of Liverpool Limited as their name and logo, showing the Liver Bird, is carved into the woodwork under the first floor bay window. The bank acquired Martin's Bank in 1918, and the outline of that name is still visible behind the Soletrader name above the front sandstone window - see 816817. Martins was bought by Barclays in 1969 and this branch was eventually closed. In 2008 the building is occupied by the shoe shop Soletrader - see 816673.
