English: Fortrey's Hall Fortrey's Hall, Near Mepal, Cambs. Timber framed house, remodelled in 17th Century to create the fenland home of Samuel Fortrey (builder of the Dutch House/Kew Place). Samuel Fortrey was one of the Adventurers who drained the fens. (Fortrey's Hall also featured in Trollope's last novel as Folking, John Caldigate's home.)
Extract from plaque in Mepal Church: "Near this place lie the remains of James Fortrey esquire descended from an ancient stock in Brabant, which took an asylum in England from persecution of the Spaniards in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. He was the 3rd son of Samuel Fortrey esq who upon undertaking the draining of the Bedford Level erected a commodious habitation in Byal Fen which coming into his son's possession was by him enlarged with several considerable apartments with Gardens and other improvements to as to make it (a place in such a situation) the admiration of the Times....." The age of the original timber framed house in unknown, speculated to be approx 1480ish and to be the Hall in the name Byal Fen. The property ended up in the ownership of Oxford University, who, having unsuccessfully applied for its demolition, sold it to a builder who saved the building. The present owners are continuing the work to restore the building. TL4481 |
