By others,Ten Times One is considered a more characteristic work than either.The plan of this story was in his mind while he was a minister in Worces-ter, and was later developed, when, convinced that thousands of individ-uals could work together for the good of the world, Dr. Hale foundedthe Lend a Hand movement, which later became world-wide in itsinfluence. The idea had been in his mind for many years. The move-ment was started in 1870, organized informally in 1886, and incorporatedin 1891. The motto adopted by this society became a well-knownslogan:— Look up and not down,Look forward and not back,Look out and not in, andLend a hand! Dr. Hales long and fruitful career in public service was relieved byfrequent trips abroad. In 1898 he resigned his pastorate of the South 63

In 1909 he returned to his Highland Street home in Roxbury,Massachusetts, and there during the spring and early summer days hewrote and received his friends.
