English: Fray's River: Former GWR railway bridge In 1899 the Great Western Railway (GWR) planned to build a loop railway around Uxbridge, extending their existing branch line off the main railway line from West Drayton around the west side of the town to join up with another of their main lines at Denham. The importance of the line to the GWR can be judged by the fact that the railway was built from Denham southwards with two junctions (Denham East and Denham West) enabling train movement to and from the proposed loop line onto the main line at Denham in both directions. The loop line was built as far south as Uxbridge High Street station, which opened in 1907. However in the meantime the Metropolitan Railway had already built their line directly into Uxbridge from London, opening it in 1904, and in view of the increased competition the GWR were forced to abandon their proposed loop. The stub end of the branch line from Denham into Uxbridge High Street station was always financially unsuccessful and passenger numbers rapidly dwindled. The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 was the trigger that signalled the end of the line for passenger trains, although a freight service lingered on until 1964. Here the Uxbridge High Street branch line from Denham spanned Fray's River on this double arch bridge.
