Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Freeman's Marsh This picture is taken from the bridge over the railway (its cutting is in the foreground) on the south side of Freeman's Marsh (common land).

The canal bisected the marsh in 1795, and the railway followed, also cutting off a bit of the land in 1847. The area between the railway and the canal is grassland, often grazed by cattle, but also popular with dog walkers as the built up area of Hungerford is just off to the right. Marsh Lock, with its distinctive swing bridge on top, can be seen. To the north the marsh is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). There it is a watermeadow formed by the River Dun, which flows in the trees just this side of the buildings of Hopgrass Farm. Beyond the farm is the A4, Bath Road, so here we have three major routes to the west country, the turnpike, the canal and the railway.

Freeman's Marsh is owned by the Manor and Town of Hungerford, these days a registered charity.
