Description

French Market, New Orleans, Louisiana. "New French Market", as opposed to the "Old French Market" a bit further down river. Old postcard view. Scene looking down river on Decatur Street, with Peters Street splitting off to right. The "Morning Call" cafe with the signature sign shaped like a giant coffee cup clearly visible.

Text on back of card:
"Interwoven with history, romance and tradition, the French Market is one of the most colorful food markets in the world. A heritage from the days of trade with the Indians, recorded history says the original market was erected in 1813. Although rebuilt, the basic Spanish Colonial and Roman Gothic characteristics have been preserved in the arcaded structures of stuccoed brick, low broad columns and heavy slated roof."

Note: Although the market dates back to the 18th century, the card seems to be correct about the 1813 date of the oldest still standing structure of the market [1].
Date Not dated. c. late 1930s/early 1940s
