Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gas Street Basin, Birmingham The stretch of canal beyond the stop lock (open, on the left))leads to the present junction of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal (started in the early 1790s) and the older Birmingham Canal, beyond the arch of Broad Street Tunnel. Originally the Worcester and Birmingham Canal terminated here at Gas Street Basin because when it opened it was prevented from connecting with the Birmingham Canal, so goods had to be carried from boat to boat across a solid barrier, known as the Worcester Bar, which separated the canals. An Act of Parliament in 1815 resulted in this stop lock being constructed, linking the two canals.
