idated bat-teries, comprising three officers and 141 men,and denominated Ricketts Battery. In thebattle of Gettysburg this battery performed verynoteworthy services. On July 2nd it occupiedan exposed position on Cemetery Hill, whichCaptain Ricketts was ordered to hold to the lastextremity. In the midst of the general actionthe famous Louisiana Tigers, 1700 strong, suddenly and unexpectedly charged with fiend-ish yells upon Ricketts- Battery and its in-fantry supports. As soon as Captain Rickettsdiscovered that this compact and desperate rebelcolumn was moving upon his position he chargedhis pieces with canister, and poured in deadlyvolleys, states Bates, in his History of thePennsylvania Volunteers. The infantry sup-ports lying behind the stone wall in front fledin despair. The brunt of the attack fell uponRicketts; but he well knew that the heart of thewhole army was throbbing for him in that des-perate hour, and how much the enemy covetedthe prize for which he was making so desperate

With an iron hand Ricketts kept everyman to his post, and every gun in full play, andthe terrible Tigers were beaten back and, num-bering barely 600, retired discomfited and dis-rupted. It would be interesting to follow Cap-tain Ricketts and his batterv into subsequent im-portant and bloody battles and through other suc-cessful campaigns to the dawn of peace, but thelimits of this sketch will not permit any furtherreferences to Captain Ricketts military life otherthan the statement that December i, 1864, hewas promoted major, and March 15, 1865, hewas commissioned colonel of the First Pennsyl-vania Light Artillery. June 3, 1865, he washonorably discharged from the military serviceof the United States, and shortly thereafter helocated in Wilkes-Barre, where he has since con-tinued to reside. Colonel Ricketts is the owner of vast tractsof woodland on the North mountain, in thecounties of Luzerne, Sullivan and Wyoming
