r rcLniiUidii: F E R ( 59 ) F E R less attempts to reconcile the Protestants to thecatholic church, and in measures to secure thesuccession to his son Maximilian, in which hewas successful. He preserved the public peaceof the empire, made a truce of eight years withthe Turks, and terminated a dispute betweenthe kings of Denmark and Sweden. Fie diedat Vienna in 1564, leaving the character of aprudent and politic prince, inclined to modera-tion and equity ; though it appears that he wasnot scrupulous in those means of aggrandisinghis authority which too readily adapt themselvesto the morality of princes. By his wife, theprincess of Hungary, he had four sons andeleven daughters. His will, by which he ap-pointed his daughters and their descendants tosucceed to the kingdoms of Bohemia and Hun-gary in default of the male line, proved longafter his death the cause of a war, in conse-quence of the claims of the electoral house ofBavaria.
