southern part ofthe area rest conformably upon it. They consist inascending order of the Carboniferous Limestone Seriesand the Millstone Grit. These Old Red and Carboniferous rocks arethrown into a syncline in the southern part of themap, and are cut off to the north by the fault Fl.The synclinal axis pitches slightly towards the south-east, causing the curved outcrop near the fault FL The Coal Measures appear to be absent from thearea, as do also the Permian, Triassic, and Jurassicrocks, the next formation represented being theCretaceous. The chalk (h) rests unconformably upon the rocksbeneath, being seen lying upon the pre-Cambrian, theOld Red and the Carboniferous rocks, and in theoutlier in the north-west overlying the fault F2. From a study of the dip arrows it will be seenthat the Tertiary Basalt rests unconformably uponthe Chalk and also overlaps it to the southward onto the Old Red Sandstone.
