o the country of the Iroquois, northern New York; the lake therenamed in his honor. Owned by Hon. John Boyd Thacher, Albany. C. C-l. Hiawatha Wampum Belt. This Indian record in shellbeads, as a document, bears the same relation to the Americanaborigine that the Constitution bears to the thirteen original Statesof this nation. It is believed to have been made in pre-Columbiantimes to commemorate the union of the five tribes, viz., MohawksOneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas and the Senecas into the IroquoisNation. This item is unique in the entire History Exhibit of theExposition. Owned by Hon. John Boyd Thacher, Albany. C-2. Hiawathas Portrait. Conception in colors. Ownedby N. Y. State. C-3. Crown. It is of silver, made by the Indians of NewYork State, such as each chief of a nation wore, consequentlyuncommon. Owned by N. Y. State Museum. C-4. Disc of Silver.
