Summary[edit]

Description
English: Dead German soldier, during World War I. The trench is vividly portrayed in the front of this photograph with no-man's land in the distance. The trench is a scene of chaos and debris. In the middle of the picture a German soldier lies dead, probably as he fell.

This harrowing image would probably not have been printed for general consumption back home in Britain. The official photographers on the Front were discouraged from recording anything which could have an adverse effect on morale. We can assume that most British citizens would not like to see such a graphic depiction of the horrors of war.
