Summary[edit]
| Description |
English: More than 85 students volunteered for the planting effort. The project was built using state and federal funds to move 3 million cubic yards of sediment from the Mississippi River via pipeline more than 5 miles to build about 500 acres of new marsh. The project site, about 25 miles south of New Orleans, was once healthy marsh but was turned into open water because of saltwater intrusion and subsidence. Louisiana and its federal partners are building restoration projects throughout the coastal zone. About 2300 square miles of coastal wetlands have eroded from the state's coast since levees were erected on the Mississippi River in the early 1930s. |
