Dame! said he, did you think when 1mended your glass for nothing yesterday, I wasto gain nothing by it to-day ? Aha ! I found outthat the kings ring was in this house, and hisMajesty now knows that fact. The pretty maidenup stairs has the ring ! Officers, follow me ! Up stairs went the glazier, the officers, theDame, and Nance. Gertrude, rising to meet her accusers, lookedvery pale, but soon gained a good courage, forshe had done no wrong. Have you the kings ring? asked the chiefofficer, admiring Gertrudes lovely face and hair.

GOLDEN-HAIRED GERTRUDE. 35 I have a diamond ring, she replied, but Iknow not whether it be the kings; here it is. 11 Now as I am a glazier, exclaimed Ferdinand,111 can tell whether it be the true ring. So taking it in his hand, he went to the win-dow, and over Gertrudes name he cut the word Yes, cried he, it is a true diamond; it cutsglass ; it is the kings. The Pigeons mouth of course was wide open. Dame Stockels for a wonder was shut. Gertrude sat on the side of her bed, coveringher face with her hands. What a pity, exclaimed the chief officer, that so fair a damsel should be a thief! Indeed I am no thief, responded Gertrude 3G GOLDEN-HAIRED GERTRUDE. indignantly ; this young man gave me the ringyesterday ; he can tell you all about it; he willtell the truth. Yes, I will tell the truth, said the glazier,- she is a thief, for she has stolen my heart! Whereupon he suddenly threw off his rags andstood in a splendid array of silk and pearls! The poor man grew rich in a single minute ! G
