It appears that a discussion took place in one of the most fa-mous salons of the capital as to what would have occurred if THE IMPERIAL FAMILY OF RUSSIA. 285 none of the imperial party had escaped with their lives whenthe terrible railway accident at Borki happened. Prince Peterof Oldenburg-, who happened to be present and who untilrecently commanded the Corps dArmee of the ImperialGuard, immediately exclaimed: In that case I should atonce have assembled the troops under my command andcaused them to take an oath of allegiance to the Grand Duke Vladimir as nextin the line of suc-cession to thethrone. This re-mark made therounds of the va-rious clubs andsalons here, andfinally came to theears of the Em-peror. The latter,although fond ofhis brother Vladi-mir, cordially dis-likes and distruststhe latters wife,who is a GermanPrincess of thegrand ducal houseof Mecklenburg-Schwerin by birth, and who has retained her Lutheran creed in-stead of becoming a member of the Rus
