Description |
English: Greenwich An atmospheric view of the Royal Naval College from the north up Greenwich Reach. The crowded old waterfront backing on to Crane Street, with Moss's Wharf and the Trafalgar Tavern towards the far end is shown darker on the left. The pillar beyond the College is probably an exaggerated and displaced interpretation of the Bellot memorial obelisk by the west corner of the King Charles Court (with the flag flying above) and all the buildings around the former Ship Hotel behind Greenwich Pier have been omitted for effect. A line of vessels is in the river to the right, parallel with the shore. Some are moored but tugs heading upstream tow small boats and lighters. The work is signed by the artist in pencil, lower left margin. The Trafalgar Tavern is featured at a distance in an etching of Greenwich by Wyllie (PAF2116), and is the subject of one of his watercolours (PAF2075). The Tavern is also portrayed in a Tissot etching held in the collection (PAG9434). |
