Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrouse butt - geograph.org.uk - 1213807.jpg |
English: Grouse butt. The 1:25000 map shows eight grouse butts, arranged in a line extending from this gridsquare into NS4478. On this occasion, I found and photographed all of them, but they clearly fell into disuse a long time ago; grouse butts are often more imposing structures built of stone, but these ones are now just a collection of regularly spaced and rather damp pits, each one slightly built up on its western side.
Counting from north to south, their locations are (nominally ±3 m): [1] NS 44396 79254 / [2] NS 44397 79205 [3] NS 44407 79156 / [4] NS 44416 79120 [5] NS 44425 79069 / [6] NS 44429 79019 [7] NS 44439 78976 / [8] NS 44444 78939 This photograph shows the third of them. See also 1213827, which shows the fourth of them; the rest were even less conspicuous. The hill in the background, on the far side of the woods, is Knockupple (see 1360197 and 1063986). |
