Pair of stoneware vases with yellow and green lead glazesMing dynasty, 16th centuryThe mid-Ming period was a time of economic prosperity in China, that caused a building boom and large demand for architectural materials. Tiles and other architectural ceramics were manufactured by clans of potters who moved around from site to site, establishing kilns wherever work was found. The design of lotuses suggests that these vases were made for a Buddhist temple, as part of a larger order that could also have included roof tiles, decorative panels and religious images, all made in ceramic.
