English: Army Staff Sgt. Benjamin Cossel (left), a soldier forward deployed to Joint Task Force Guantanamo, jumps off the pier and into the water as his friends on the departing boat pull away at the base ferry landing, April 11. Cossel is participating in a long-standing Guantanamo tradition of jumping off the pier into the ocean sometimes in full military uniform to honor those friends and fellow service members who completed their tours on the Caribbean island. JTF Guantanamo provides safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. The JTF conducts intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination for the protection of detainees and personnel working in JTF Guantanamo facilities and in support of the War on Terror. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations. The JTF conducts planning for and, on order, responds to Caribbean mass migration operations. |
