The next chambercontained the tomb of St. Cecilia,whose remains now lie in S. Ceciliain Trastevere. On the wall severalByzantine paintings. We next enter theTomb of Pope Eusebius, then anotherchamber with two sarcopagi, still con-taining remains preserved in mummy-like form. We now come to theTomb of Caecilia Metella, one of themost conspicuous objects in the Cam-pagna. It is circular in form, 65 ft. indiameter, the tomb of Metellus Creti-cus, wife of the younger Crassus, sonof the triumvir. Later it was usedas the tower of a stronghold, con-nected with a palace, the ruins of whichare still visible. The Via Appia now be-comes more interesting and the tombsmore frequent, the old pavement isalso often to be seen. Somewhat overa mile farther on, to the left, is theCasale di S.
