The repro-ductions are chiefly from sculptures of Maya and NahuaIndians made before Columbus reached America.11 On the left is an exhaustive series of pottery, jade andstone work, mostly from Costa Rica, deposited in the Mu-seum by Minor C. Keith. This collection is supplementedby more than 500 gold specimens which have been placedin cases in the center of the hall. All of them are of pre-Spanish times and were made when many ornaments wereworn by the Indians. They include beads, pins, nose andarm trinkets and a large number of golden bells in theform of monkeys, jaguars, birds, butterflies, frogs and liz-ards. Singularly, vegetative motives are almost entirelylacking. Accompanying the gold objects are ornaments ofpolished jade, the designs upon which are highly conven-tionalized figures of birds and animals; also of interest area few original molds made of rosin, which when used inthe process of manufacture were encased in clay, the pitch 13 Hand book in press. 59

MEXICAN AND CENTRAL AMERICAN SCULPTURES 60 THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY being melted out and the gold poured in. Mixed casting, aswell as plating, is represented. Opposite the Costa Rican material is a number of stonesculptures made by the Maya peoples, who were remark-able above all other cultured American nations for theirarchitecture, calendar and hieroglyphic system. Theirhieroglyphic records were carved or painted originally uponthe walls of their temples and palaces, or written in booksmade of maguey paper. A great deal of attention has beengiven to the Maya language, which has been forcefulenough to remain unsupplanted. Many of the monumentsbear designs of priest-like beings who carry serpents andother ceremonial objects in their hands. There is a number of reproductions of the stela; andaltars of Copan arranged in order from the oldest andcrudest forms to the latest and finest examples, covering aperiod of nearly three hundred years.
