tein cells. They are smaller in size than the lutein-cells, whichare found in a mature corpus luteum ; but in every other way thelutein cell of an atresic follicle resembles the lutein cell of thecorpus luteum. The resemblance is so intimate that we are verysceptical as to the view which is held by German authors that thelarge lutein cells have a different source of origin from that of thesmall theca-lutein cell. German authorities speak of the formeras the granulosa-lutein cells, attributing their origin to the stratumgranulosum, i.e. to an origin from an epithelial source ; whereas, weare of opinion that the theca-lutein cell and the granulosa-luteincell are both derivatives of the theca interna, and are, therefore, ineach case, of connective-tissue origin, just as is the decidual cell, which they closely resemble. (4) The atresic follicle ultimatelybecomes invaded by hyaline fibrous tissue and thus forms a corpusalbicans, which in its turn is gradually broken up by young fibroblasts
Text Appearing After Image:
THE OVARY 45 and disappears. The last evidence of its existence is a tortuousstrand of hyaline connective tissue, many of which are to be seen inevery ovary. The final stage of an atresic follicle is therefore similarto that of a healthy corpus luteum (vide infra). The Corpus Luteum. The appearance of this body is very strikingand characteristic in virtue of the colour-contrast between the yellowinvesting convolutions and the dark-red central parts. It is circularor oval in shape, about 2 cm. in diameter ; it projects upon the surfaceof the ovary and may easily be shelled out of its bed. In addition toeffused blood, it contains degenerated granulosa cells and the new ele-ments known as lutein cells (see Fig. 32 and PI. III). These cells closely
