n of the tissues. This has spread from the cervical canal to thedeep aspect of the intact squamous epithelium. At a later stage the squamousepithelium is thrown off, and true ulceration, followed by erosion, aroundthe external os is thus produced. logical name for the condition is pseudo-adenoma, glandular prolifera-tion being combined with, and being indeed due to, an inflammatoryprocess. A benign adenoma (a definite neoplasm) also occurs in thecervix and must be carefully distinguished from pseudo-adenoma dueto inflammation (see p. 500). Pathological Anatomy. In order to understand erosions thestudent must be familiar with the appearances and structure of thenormal cervix already described on pp. 19-22. In the foetus the true mucous membrane extends beyond the externalOS, so that the lining of the cervical canal, in early life, spreads itself outfor a variable distance upon the free vaginal surface of the cervix. When this foetal condition persists it gives rise to what is known as a

This explains how it is that we find sometimeserosions on the cervix in the cases of young virgins, and in the absenceof inflammation. Congenital erosions are however uncommon, andwith this exception we are convinced that erosions are caused byinflammation. Microscopically, it is quite impossible to distinguish any differencebetween an ectropion produced by laceration of the cervix (see p. 559) Area of ulceration Infiltrated tissue covered by new columnar epithelium Squamousepithelium
