Especially characteristic are the cachalot ivorypendants and shell and ivory breastplates of the Fijians, the jadebeads of New Caledonia, the shell breast ornaments of theSolomons, the turtle-shell fretwork of the Solomons, New Ireland,Admiralty, and New Guinea, and the boars tusks of New Guineaand the New Britain Archipelago ; the ornaments of the AdmiraltyIslands are very similar to those of the Papuans. Habitations vary greatly in pattern and in size, from the rudewind-screens of the Tasmanians to the large communal dwellingsof New Britain and PajKian New Guinea.
