Text Appearing Before Image:
r thought of putting yourarms around her. She was too wonder-ful—this little Sabbath Grandmother—for that. Through the window you watched themas they went down the walk together tothe front gate, Grandmother and Grand-father, the tips of her gloved fingers laidin the hollow of his arm. Very solemnwas the steady stumping of his cane.Very solemn was the day. Even theroosters knew it was Sunday, somehow, and crowed in a hushed sort of way; andthe bells—the church-bells tolling throughthe quiet air—made you lonesome andcross with Lizbeth. Your collar was verystiff, and your Sunday trousers were verytight, and there was nothing to do, andyou were dreary. After dinner Grandfather went to sleepon the sofa, with a newspaper over hisface. Then Grandmother took you upinto her black silk lap and read youBible stories and taught you the Twenty-third Psalm and the golden text. Andevery one of the golden texts meant thesame thing—that little boys should bevery good and do as they are told.
Text Appearing After Image:
TO AND FRO GRANDMOTHER ROCKED YOU 5;u HARPERS MONTHLY MAGAZINE. Grandmothers Sunday lap was not sonice as her other ones to lie in. HerMonday lap, for instance, was soft andgray, and there were no texts to disturbyour revery. But Grandmother wouldstop her knitting to pinch your cheek andsay, You dont love Grandmother. Yes, I do. How much ? Moren tonguecantell. What is atonguecantell, Grandmother ? And while she was telling you shewould be poking the tip of her finger intothe soft of your jacket so that you doubledup suddenly with your knees to yourchin; and while you guarded your ribs, afunny spider would crawl down the backof your neck; and when you chased thespider out of your collar, it would sud-denly creep under your chin, or therewould be a panic in the ribs again. Bythat time you were nothing but wrigglesand giggles and little cries. Dont, Grandmother; you tickle. And Grandmother would pause, breath-less as yourself, and say, Oh, my! Now you must do it some more,Grandmother, you
