| Description |
English: Hatchment, St Cuthbert's Church Hatchments were hung in front of a house soon after one of the occupants had died. Later they were mounted on lozenge shaped frames and brought into the church. This one hangs on the wall of the south aisle and is one of several displayed in the church. Hatchment of Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk (1746-1815), who married, secondly, Frances Scudamore (1750–1820), the only child and heiress of Charles FitzRoy-Scudamore of Holme Lacy House. The Duke and Duchess died without surviving children and after extensive litigation the Holme Lacy estate devolved in 1819 upon Capt. Sir Edwyn Francis Stanhope, Bart., R. N., who assumed the additional name and arms of Scudamore and whose son succeeded in 1883 as 9th Earl of Chesterfield. With inescutcheon of Scudamore (Gules, three stirrups leathered and buckled or), sinister, and inescutcheon of Coppinger (Azure, a bull's head couped between three estoiles argent), dexter, for his first wife Marion Coppinger, daughter and heiress of John Coppinger. |
