Summary[edit]

Description
English: Hawthorn Quarry from above The quarry is cut into an east-facing slope near the Durham coast and ceased working in 1985. It is a site of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review with substantial exposures of Permian dolomitic limestone and Upper Permian layers which formed as a marine barrier reef in the shallow, tropical, Zechstein Sea. This was not made by coral but by bryozoan animals and algal stromatolites giving rise to formations that can be seen in the quarry http://www.jncc.gov.uk/pdf/gcrdb/GCRsiteaccount1975.pdf
