f the malady were formerlysupposed to be, in different cases, exposure to cold and privation,intemperance, overexertion, and mental anxiety, but it is nowheld by most authorities that in the great majority of cases thedisease is a remote result of syphilis. In some instances the dis-ease appears to be hereditary. Lo-comotor ataxia is much more com-mon among men than among wo-men. It is a disease of middle life,being most frequently observed tooccur between the ages of thirty andfifty. Symptoms.—^Locomotor ataxiausually begins insidiously, and ad-vances slowly. Among the earliersymptoms observed are disordersof vision, with occasionally tempor-ary or permanent paralysis of someof the cranial nerves, a feeling of un-easiness in the back, accompaniedwith violent shooting pains downthe limbs, as indicated by the shad-ed area in accompanying illustra-tion, decreased or perverted sensi-bility in various parts of the body,and disturbance of the genito-uri-nary functions. 131-4 NEEVOUS DISEASES signs of the disease discovered by the physician, two of the mostimportant are: loss or diminution of the knee-jerks obtained ontapping the patellar tendon; and a sluggish condition of the irisof the eye, which, though altering the size of the pupil as the eyeaccommodates itself for vision of near objects, fails to contractnormally when a bright light falls upon the eye. These initialsymptoms may continue without much change for a long period,but generally, in the course of time, others are superadded, whichgive more definite intimation of the existence of the disease,and render its diagnosis a matter of little difficulty. The suf-ferer begins to be aware that he cannot walk with the samefreedom as before, and he feels as if some soft substance wereinterposed between his feet and the ground. His gait assumesa peculiar and characteristic appearance. He begins the act ofwalking with evident difficulty, and his steps are short and hur-ried. Each foot is lifted well
