English: Part of the Hell Scroll, a Heian period handscroll and "Illustrated Scroll of the Six Paths of Rebirth", depicting seven of the sixteen lesser hells from the Sutra of the World Arising (起世経, kisekyō). The hells are arranged in the order (2-10-9-11-1-6-15). Except for the last section all paintings are accompanied by a text starting with the phrase: "There is yet another hell,..." followed by a description of the cause of the sinner's fall into this particular hell. This picture shows the Hell of the Flaming Cock, the fourth section of the scroll and the 11th of the sixteen hells. The scroll has been designated as National Treasure of Japan in the category paintings.
