Description
English: Translated full plate description: "This topic is very similar to the previous one. On a wild and desolate coast, the beautiful Andromeda, dressed in a white peplum and a tunic of the same color, a symbol of mourning among ancient peoples, is chained to a rock, with both arms outstretched, and in the attitude the most apt to excite pity. All poets agree on this circumstance:

.... ad duras religatam vincula cautes (1). "Pliny even assures us that the irons that Andromeda had worn were kept at Joppa. A sort of garland suspended from the rock indicates a consecrated victim. "In the foreground, a woman, in water up to her knees and dressed in a reddish tunic, flees, raising her hands to the sky. Some critics see in this figure the mother of Andromeda, Cassiopeia, who indeed, as a constellation, is represented with outstretched arms (2). According to others, it is a Nereid who flees terrified, either by the head of Medusa that Perseus carries on his shield, or by the sight of the sea monster. This last opinion seems to us the most admissible. The face of Perseus is almost completely obliterated: we can still see his legs half-dived in the waves, his arm which raises the terrible harpoon, and part of the shield to which he no doubt suspended the head of the Gorgon. At the sight of this talisman, the monster tries to turn away: but it is too late; his limbs have already stiffened, and if there still remains blood and life in any part of his vast body, the sword will seek it there."
