Description
English: Translated related text to English: Plate 120 - This painting is still taken from the Pantheon (now called the Macellum), where it was found on the right when entering through the door of the forum. In a kind of portico, capriciously decorated, and perhaps under the prostyle of a temple, a conqueror, in an attitude full of pride, but with a dreamy countenance which indicates that he is already meditating new exploits, is seated on a heap of arms, the spoils of the enemy he has vanquished. His costume consists of a blue tunic which is held by a gold belt, and over which is thrown a purple cloak: his red buskins are edged in gold and trimmed with fur. In his left hand he holds the parazonium, and in his right a gnarled tree branch, at the end of which is attached a trophy of arms. The custom of displaying such trophies in the triumphs goes back to Romulus, who, his robe raised by a belt, and his head crowned with laurel, carried to the temple of Jupiter Feretrian the trunk of an oak, to which he had hung the remains of Acron, king of the Ceninates. According to Virgil, the use goes back even further (1); but the Latin poet is not, in this respect, an irrefutable authority. What will attract the attention of antique dealers to this figure is the hairstyle of the young warrior: above a golden diadem stand three palmettes of foliage, joined together by red bands. This ornament appears to be what the ancients called a lemniscate diadem: the strips of red wool which here form four folds or tori called lemnisques (2). We can presume that the conqueror wore a similar headdress until the moment when he was decorated with the real triumphal crown, the crown of oak, which here Victory still holds suspended over the head of the warrior.

Victory herself is dressed in a sleeveless tunic, of violet purple: a green mantle, gathered in picturesque folds around her belt, one end draped over her left shoulder: this figure wears white cothurns; finally she holds a palm in her left hand, placed between her fingers in a way that indicates a great deal of naturalness and abandon.

The merit of these two figures cannot be fully understood from the single view of the engraving; it depends a great deal on the vigor of the coloring, on the strength of the shadows, which stand out boldly against a light background, and finally on a frankness of execution which corresponds to the clearness of the artist's ideas. The fresco, considered in itself, has been classified among the most beautiful in the Neapolitan Museum.
