o the south-west, and the landlord at the inn will showyou the names of some of them cut with a diamond on thewindow panes, and also an old rent book of the family, whichshows that their estates were spread over half-a-dozen parishes.The most famous of them was Ralph Sheldon, the squire of theseventeenth century. He was an indefatigable collector ofbooks, manuscripts, and antiquities. Readers of AnthonyWoods autobiography will remember how often he wouldwalk over to \\eston from Oxford to visit his friend andpatron, and how many happy weeks he spent there arrangingand cataloguing the library. Weston enjoyed the distinction ofpossessing this fine library for a century after the death of itscollector, but when poverty comes in at the door, books fly outof the window, and in 1781, when the squire of that day sleptwith liis fathers, it was brought to the hammer at LongCompton. Ralphs copy of the first folio Shakespeare, and alarge collection of old play.s, were among its ciiief treasures.

Just beyond Weston, on the further side of the Shipstonroad, is Little Wolford, famous for its interesting fifteenthcentury manor-house. You may make an afternoons excursionthere from Brailes, or take it on a ride to Four-shire-stone,which marks the meeting place of the shires of Gloucester,Worcester, A\arwick and Oxford. The manor-house is ofthe typical form characteristic of its date, a hall in thecentre, with a projecting wing on either side. One of thewings has been pulled down ; the remaining one is of stonebelow and half-timber work above ; the central part is all stone.In the hall, which preserves its screen and gallery, hang rustyweapons and accoutrements, and a curious instrument of iron,which the farmers wife tells you is an eel-drag, with which theeels were dragged up from the ponds.
